I would like to recognize Emma for the compassion and dignity she showed while caring for an elderly patient during clinical. The patient had recently been informed by his physician that he would likely need to begin dialysis, and because of a language barrier, he was understandably overwhelmed and anxious.

Emma immediately recognized the importance of making sure he fully understood his care and took the initiative to locate an iPad so the medical interpreter service could be used. Because of her advocacy, the patient was able to communicate comfortably, ask questions, and better understand this life-changing recommendation.

In addition to advocating for his understanding, Emma also focused on his comfort and emotional well-being. She noticed the patient’s feet and legs were extremely dry and uncomfortable, and she took the time to gently apply lotion while massaging upward to help promote circulation and relaxation. What may seem like a small gesture clearly meant so much to the patient, who became visibly calmer and more comforted through her care.

Emma demonstrated that exceptional nursing is not only about medical tasks, but also about empathy, respect, advocacy, and treating patients with dignity during vulnerable moments. Her kindness and attentiveness left a lasting impression on our clinical group and truly embody the values of the DAISY Award.

Thank you, Emma, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
