Emmanuela encouraged me to be a daughter and not an employee. She invited me to be vulnerable. I was able to share my feelings of being overwhelmed, stressed, and tired with her.
As hospital chaplain, I am usually the one who comforts and supports our patients and families, however, I found myself the one in need of care when my mother was recently hospitalized here. I was overwhelmed, stressed, and disoriented because everything was happening so fast. We were treated well by everyone but something extraordinary stood out about Emmanuela Jeune.
First of all, she has a calming and reassuring voice. Not once did she cause me to feel as if I were inconveniencing her when I asked her multiple questions, some of which were the same ones I had asked before. No matter what was going on, she always had a smile on her face.
Emmanuela listed intently as I shared Mon's medical history and she would paraphrase back to me what she heard, which decreased my anxiety.
When I was afraid to take a break or leave the room due to fear of Mom failing due to her dementia, Emmanuela reassured me she was going to take care of my mother. A bed alarm was put in place and she told me she would closely monitor her while I was gone. That helped to ease my anxiety and fear.
Emmanuela explained all of Mon's medications and what they were for without me having to ask.
She has great follow-through. If I asked her something and she didn't have the answer right away, she would follow-up just like she said she would.
What struck me the most about this Extraordinary Nurse, is how she cared for my mother by treated her with dignity and respect. She made Mom laugh. When mom would make statements to her that made me cringe on the inside, she had a way of pleasantly redirecting her to get the desired outcome. She could get Mom to do things I could not.
Emmanuela encouraged me to be a daughter and not an employee. She invited me to be vulnerable. I was able to share my feelings of being overwhelmed, stressed, and tired with her.
I am eternally grateful for the care Emmanuela provided to my mother. Methodist Health System is blessed to have her on their team.
Our lives are fuller and richer due to the unforgettable impact and impression Emmanuela made on us.
If Mom is ever in the hospital again or if I had to come, I would definitely want Emmanuela as our nurse. She has a servant's heart and smile. She is an outstanding nurse.
Note: This is Emmanuela's 2nd DAISY Award!
