They ensured that I was comfortable and provided me with my favorite diet coke. And I had absolutely no nausea!
I had a scheduled routine colonoscopy and EGD at the WellStar West Georgia Medical Center endoscopy department. From precertification, PATT, registration, and the endo Team — nothing possibly could have gone better. I received very detailed information regarding my prep from Dr. Coggin’s office as well as from Leeann Siggers, the secretary of the endo department. I received a very timely call from the registration team prior to my procedure. The check-in process on the morning of my surgery was effortless and I was in the endo department probably 5 minutes from the time I entered the door of the hospital.

Upon entering the endo department, I was met with the utmost kindness and professional care. Howard, RN, and Robins Romaine, RN were there to get me started. I was very nervous as I am not used to being a patient. Sally did a very complete assessment and helped alleviate my fears with her gentle voice and spirit. Robin educated me on the need for my IV and got the IV started with just one stick! She educated me on the procedure and stated the anesthesia nurse provider, Millie Cornejo, would be coming to see me prior to my case. These two nurses respected my privacy and kept me comfortable with warm blankets. They informed me that my case was on time, gave me the time of the procedure and what to expect, and educated me on the recovery process.

During my wait, I had a visit from Janet Shirah, RN, and Stephanie Cato. They came in to ensure my comfort and notified me of who would be my procedure team — Mark Jordan, RN, and Ashley Smallwood, RN. Millie, the CRNA, came in during this time and did my preoperative anesthesia review. I told her my biggest fear of the procedure was the anesthesia because I get so nauseated from the medications. She reviewed my previous encounters with anesthesia, discussed what I had taken for nausea previously, and then recommended a change in the medications. She assured me that she would do everything possible to prevent post-procedure nausea. She also reviewed what sedation she would use and how quickly I would be sedated and how quickly I would wake up post-procedure.

Dr. Coggins could not have been more complete with his education for my procedure. Upon entering the room, Mark and Ashley assisted with getting me comfortable and all team members included me in the time-out procedure. I woke up in the recovery room with Kate Bound, RN, and Amy Laney, RN. They ensured that I was comfortable and provided me with my favorite diet coke. And I had absolutely no nausea! Dr. Coggins came into the recovery room and told me of the findings of my procedure and assured me that since I was still a little groggy that he would review the findings again at my office visit. I was discharged in a very timely manner. And I received a discharge phone call from Sally Howard, RN within 24 hours of my procedure to ensure that I was doing well and that the department had met my expectations.

From start to finish I had a wonderful experience. I am fortunate that this team is my team, and I was able to experience the care that they provide to our community every single day. The DAISY Award honors nurses and care providers for their compassionate care and their clinical excellence. This Endo team provided me with compassion and clinical excellence. No, there is not a unique event that took place during my procedure that will stand out to you in my story. You may say this is what we do every day, and this is our job. But, for me, the uniqueness was that this team assured me that my community has the best nurses, care providers, and GI proceduralists. I was able to witness how this team works together and goes above and beyond for their patients.
