My son smiled for the first time in 24+ hours after Enrique recognized and talked to him about a game he (the patient/my son) was playing. It was a touching exchange to watch as my son lit up and looked like he felt seen and recognized at that moment. It was very much a moment which he felt humanized and cared for as a human versus "just a patient". Enrique had already been giving great nursing care and meeting all of my son's physical needs, but this was a moment of going further and meeting a spiritual and emotional need for connection as a human and as a "bro". HaHa!
