St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital (SJMOH) leadership presented a very special DAISY Award to the Oakland ER Nursing Team. It was the DAISY Foundation's first ever DAISY Team Award for St. John Providence Health System. ER Nurse Annette Foreman, RN, wrote a beautiful tribute to ER nurses, entitled "I Am An ER Nurse" wherein she outlines what it's like to be an ER Nurse and why she is committed to her work:
I am an ER Nurse
St. John's Oakland emergency department is made up of nurses with differing nursing backgrounds, personalities, and differing life experiences, yet we are one. I am an ER Nurse.
The emergency room is the front and back door of the hospital. It greets all of the patients. It is the beginning of healthcare for most people of the surrounding community.
As an emergency room nurse, I am a first responder. First to be exposed to communicable diseases. First to encounter the angry patient, family members and friends. First to be violently assaulted. I am an ER Nurse.
Comfort, Care, Compassion are in my skill set, yet most days I feel defeated and wonder if this is all worth doing. I educate the general public and assist with the continued education of the residence in training. I am an ER Nurse.
The orders are followed and all testing is complete before the patient goes home or to the inpatient floors. Medications are given, labs are drawn, ecg is done and IVs are started. The patient is complete on the receiving end either home or admitted. I am an ER Nurse.
Some floor nurses come down to the ER when we are lacking in staff and quickly go back to the floors wishing us well and counting their blessings they are still in one piece. I have often heard, "How can you stand it? It's too much to put up with. There's too much to do. It's too chaotic." I am an ER Nurse.
The Emergency Room is my job, my home away from home. The staff is my extended family. We come with a variety of nursing experience and with various months to years in our chosen field. There is heartache and heartbreak and still we are here. I am full time and part time. I am an ER Nurse.
The DAISY Award is a representation of the St. John Providence Oakland Emergency Nursing Staff. I am an ER Nurse.
