Eric was patient, taking time to sit with us each day and review the goals, plan of care, and next steps.
B was born at SMMC and due to an abnormal EKG, was transferred the next day to SFMC NICU for cardiac evaluation. During that time she also developed issues with hypoxia and bradycardia. Mom stayed around the clock with B in the NICU, however, mom learned that B's sibling tested positive for COVID. Per hospital protocol, mom, dad, and siblings were sent home to quarantine. Understandably this was an emotional time for mom and dad to leave their newborn alone in the NICU.
Since I had not yet been in to see the baby, Mom was able to designate both a grandmother and myself as the support persons. From the moment I entered the NICU, all the staff was kind and welcoming. Eric M. was the nurse. He had already demonstrated compassion and support to mom and dad prior to leaving, and he demonstrated that same compassion and support to me and B's grandmother as we stepped in to ensure we could support mom's wishes that B was not left alone.
Eric was patient, taking time to sit with us each day and review the goals, plan of care, and next steps. He had already established a relationship with mom and knew how difficult this was for her to not be with her newborn, so he ensured that we could FaceTime on rounds, allowing mom to have an opportunity to ask questions. The entire IDR team was inclusive of mom and dad during rounds, which again demonstrated holistic physical and emotional caring. Eric charted in the room, and as he sat down he walked me through any question I had. It made me feel very comfortable and there was never a silly question to him - he reviewed everything clearly and patiently.
Most of all, he represented the values of OSF in every interaction. He shared the professional work that this NICU nursing team is doing to ensure best practices. Many times I saw him helping other staff members and was equally as calm and patient with them. His clinical skill set is strong, and his patient advocacy and support skills are equally as strong. Eric displays a confident and patient/family-first approach that made all of us involved with B's hospitalization appreciate how fortunate we are to have this quality of nursing care in our community. Thank you - you truly made a difference!
