Erica is the nurse that stays until the patient is stable and even then, she comes back to make sure there is nothing else needed.
I have worked with Erica for six years. The point of a DAISY Award is to recognize positive nursing experiences and an amazing nurse who goes above and beyond. So that is what I want to do. I want to say thank you to Erica for all that she has done. I have watched Erica support families, staff, and, most of all, patients during their difficult times.
Even today, she comes into the room and steps up by doing what she does best. Caring for the patient, supporting staff, and offering help. She does not pause and will do any role that needs to be filled, from IVs, MTP, and A-line troubleshooting to foley placement. Erica is the nurse that stays until the patient is stable and even then, she comes back to make sure there is nothing else needed. Erica fills in at the desk when needed, covers breaks (doing the work until the primary RN is back), offers an ear if needed, is always willing to educate, and has even run over to Peds ED when they are busy.
Even now, she advocates for the patient and discusses with the doctor the vitals and other options that should be considered until she feels heard. She is what DAISY stands for. She is caring, has leadership, practices autonomy, resourcefulness, and accountability. Although I am friends with her, it does not change the fact that through the years, I have always respected her and trusted her to take care of my family - which she has done and trust me when I tell you, I would not hesitate to have her care for my family in the future. I want Erica to know what she means to our unit, and what better way than to acknowledge her with a DAISY?
This one is for you, Erica!
