It was heartwarming to get to witness someone be able to provide peace and joy to an amazing patient and their spouse who have struggled so much.
Erica is caring for a patient who is part of a small patient population that can only be treated here at Ochsner Jefferson HWY. This patient has struggled with their health and has been in and out of the hospital for a few years now. When the patient received the special device, due to the nature of it, the staff becomes very familiar with not just the patient's medical situation but their entire family and their situation as well. The patients and their families become like family to all of us who care for them. The patient's spouse has been their support member for this entire health adventure and was in the ICU day in and day out when things were not looking positive. They found peace with coloring in a coloring book during this difficult time; it was the only thing to distract them from the reality that they may lose their person. This year, the patient's spouse was diagnosed with their own health issues causing them to have to go through rounds of treatment, while the patient has been stuck inpatient at the main campus due to their health issues while their spouse gets treatment. Both the patient and spouse are outwardly showing the effects this has caused on them both as they are scared and want to be there for each other and are in the same situation that they were a year ago with the reality that they may lose each other again. Erica personally has had someone in her life who had the same path. While she always goes above and beyond for her patients, for this patient she saw the level of stress that was weighing on the patient and their spouse as it is life or death. In turn, Erica bought a "words of encouragement" coloring book, fresh markers, a tote bag, a candle, and some additional sweets for the patient's spouse. She then gave it to the patient and spouse while the patient was facetiming the spouse. Erica remembered the little gestures that people made during her situation and wanted to pay it forward to this patient and spouse because it had such a profound effect on her and her situation. The patient's spouse also said, "See family pops up in the most unexpected places." It's rare these days to watch people go out of their way to take care of things outside of their priorities and it was heartwarming to get to witness someone be able to provide peace and joy to an amazing patient and their spouse who have struggled so much. It's people like her that inspire people like me to choose nursing and choose to do the jobs that we do. This is not the first time Erica has done something like this and it will certainly not be the last time. She constantly goes above and beyond the "job responsibilities" and actively chooses to make an impact on each individual patient she cares for and never realizes that she is not like everyone else, she goes out of her way to provide the most holistic and thoughtful care that she possibly can.
