My husband was admitted and sent to surgery unexpectedly. Post-surgery, when we were able to visit, Erica was his nurse. She was kind and patient with his questions and concerns. She was helpful to us family members coming to visit. Most of all, she truly seemed to enjoy her job and made the environment more cheerful and light-hearted. Before the time of mask-wearing, it was easy to read people’s facial expressions; Masks have surely made it a little more complicated. There was no mistaking that Erica was smiling, laughing, and truly caring about her patients and not just going through the motions of a job. As a care provider myself, it is easy to forget that the people we come in contact with on a daily basis don’t experience this as their ‘everyday normal.’ So often a smile or a little compassion goes a long way to impart a feeling of trust and warmth in an otherwise sterile environment.
