I was hospitalized at Bayfront Health with a fractured femur. Five days later, I was denied coverage by WEllcare to be transferree to the 7th floor. Wellcare's reason for denial was stated, "The records did not show that you will improve with therapy." I was very upset and discouraged. Erika came to my room to discuss my need for intense therapy. She showed concern, interest, and compassion and I explained my daily active lifestyle or 1-1/2 mile lap swimming and 2 hour weight and strength training at the gym. She listened to my hope of being able to camp again with my family in national parks. I definitely wanted to appeal Wellcare's denial, but I didn't know how to expedite the 90-day process. When Erika saw my deep disappointment and anxiety, she kindly offered to be my advocate and was more than willing to articulate in writing the medical knowledge and terminology required for a strand appeal. For one hour in my room, Erika spoke with one Wellcare supervisor after another, all of whom wanted to send us papers to appeal "in case we were denied." Efforts to clarify that I was already denied and that we were ready for a fast appeal were not acknowledged. Thanks to Erika's expertise, she filled out alternative papers for a fast appeal and faxed them to Wellcare. I knew I could trust Erika to help me. In the appeal, she presented strong evidence that supported my need for intense therapy. I was approved for PT 7th floor days later. It had been David against Goliath. For Erika Escobar, I will always be grateful, without any reservation, I know. She made it possible for me to receive the excellent medical care I needed. Her concern, integrity, perseverance, empathy, experience, and knowledge granted me a rehabilitation and healthier life - now and years from now.
