Unable to secure a tactile interpreter overnight, Erika took it upon herself to research and learn tactile sign language via YouTube to communicate effectively with the patient. She printed materials as visual aids while learning to sign in the patient’s hand. Erika carefully tailored her efforts to include signs relevant to the patient’s care, including medications, the plan of care, and other essential aspects of their stay. By spending extra time in the patient’s room and ensuring they felt safe, informed, and understood, Erika went above and beyond her role.
