Erika is an impressive student nurse who was always engaged and well-prepared for her patient care assignments at a long-term care facility. Clients in this setting are particularly challenging due to chronic health conditions, high-risk for falls and injuries, dementia, sensory loss, and mobility issues. Despite those challenges, Erika consistently displayed compassion for each client assigned to her care, providing them safe and undivided attention. She graciously assisted nursing staff and clients in situations that were not always pleasant for the client or the student nurse.

In difficult situations, Erika always proceeded with calm and confidence. She was always courteous and professional being mindful that care, compassion, and service to others is an important principle. Erika has been observed sitting with, talking, listening, and reading to her clients. She provided assistance to any resident who needed help and not just those for whom she was assigned. Erika is praised for her compassionate care, leadership and teamwork, especially providing support and assistance to fellow nursing students at the clinical site, and in the classroom. Erika embodies a spirit of empathy, compassion, leadership, and advocacy in nursing, which is why she was chosen by Hood College nursing program faculty as a 2022 student DAISY Award Honoree.
