Yesterday, we had a patient with presumed underlying severe mental illness, a history of a traumatic childhood, as well a history of polysubstance use disorder admitted to our service very sick (septic from cellulitis, septic arthritis, and an abscess on his lower extremity) and in a lot of pain. He was one of the more challenging patients with whom our team has had to interact with, and he was screaming at the top of his lungs for many hours despite adequate pain control efforts. His nurse, Erin Pigeon, on 4S was exceptional all around (medically/clinically, professionally, and personally). I was truly touched by her compassion and willingness to see his humanity and need for caring attention. Her modeled behavior was impressive to our entire team and set the tone of how everyone interacted with him. She deserves a big shout-out!!
