Piper spent the next nearly four hours comforting and holding his wife, not leaving the hospital until almost midnight.
A patient that Piper cared for in the ICU, passed away unexpectedly. He was admitted with COVID, and spent nearly two months in the hospital, mostly in isolation away from his wife and two sons. In that time, Piper made every effort to check on the patient, and make him feel safe and feel less isolated and alone, even on days that he wasn't under her direct care. On the particular day that this patient passed away, he had been transferred days prior to CSCU, and was no longer under ICU management. He was taken to the OR, and that is where he passed late in the evening. Piper had worked 12 hours that day in the ICU. Her shift had ended and she was ready to go home to her family. The patient's wife asked if Piper was working, and requested her at her husband's bedside. Piper spent the next nearly four hours comforting and holding his wife, not leaving the hospital until almost midnight. I know this family will never forget Piper, or how much comfort and support she offered them that night. Piper truly has empathy for her patients, and every patient and family member feels her compassion and desire to treat them as her own family. This quality is unique, and definitely what makes Piper special and a true DAISY Nurse.
