Erin Reilly, a brilliant RN, was assigned a patient who had become a friend to our unit. He had been on the floor for several weeks and was known to all. The patient was an older teen who had a trach and had profound difficulty in communicating with his family and the care team. All of the traditional communication techniques were not signable for this patient, and the patient would get visibly emotional with frustration regarding this need we could not meet as a team. A communication challenge so big his family could not tackle it alone. When Erin received this patient, she knew something had to be done to help him. I was impressed to see Erin collaborate with the patient's family to make a custom communication board that could express more complex phrases that a teen boy would want to say. I witnessed first-hand how carefully she placed phrases on the board using the resources and tools available to her. It was a true spirit of nursing ingenuity and a holistic care for nursing that the patient hadn't received yet in his time with us. I think this was particularly special because Erin had only been with the patient once or twice before, realizing this was a big gap in their needs. I believe that her taking time out of her day to work on this project for a patient going home later that week was going the extra mile and should be celebrated. Erin went above and beyond her bedside responsibilities to help the communication barrier even beyond the hospital walls. Through her brilliant idea, the family expressed great gratitude, and the patient was excited to have a tool that may finally help him express his needs and wants. Way to think outside the box and really take care of the whole patient. Truly exceptional nursing care.
