Erin Whitehurst is always keeping me busy on the weekend when we work together, usually cleaning CVIU. Sunday was no exception. I was in charge and she was my team lead/floater. I told Erin that morning that I thought it would be nice to get one of our extended stay patients outside, if possible. Erin took that idea and ran a marathon. She got permission from the primary nurse first (to get permission from the surgical team) then she went to radiology and got a transport chair. We got her to the chair and attached a transport monitor. We got outside and the patient's face lit up. We then went on what I now call "The Adventures of Erin". The patient wanted to see some flowers, so Erin picked her a rose off one of the bushes. Erin told her there was a fish pond, so we also went there. While we were at the fish pond, her surgical team member stopped to see us and was impressed with how good she looked outside. As we talked about the new chapel and the aquarium at the children's hospital, the patient wanted to see that as well, so off we went. When we got back to her room, Erin washed her hair with shampoo and conditioner. The patient has been at Vidant Medical Center for 33 days. She has been in CVIU this current time 20 days. Erin always goes above and beyond for her patients, from getting real grits and butter for a patient from the main cafeteria, making a back scratcher out of tongue depressors, to taking an adventure outside.
