The following email was sent by a patient to Eris's Clinical Instructor, Susan Moore, MSN, RN, CN:
"I was recently at UPMC Shadyside Hospital on 4 Main, recovering from cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC. I was very fortunate to be assigned one of your nursing students, Eris McLean, for two days during my hospitalization. I simply cannot say enough about her. She is extremely knowledgeable, has a passion for nursing, and the most uplifting personality that is simply infectious. She is not only going to make an exceptional RN, but I can easily see her in a leadership role at a hospital. I hope you know how fortunate you are to have her as one of your students. I would be very appreciative if you would forward this message to your chair, whose email address I do not have."
When Eris's Clinical Instructor contacted the patient asking if she could include her name on the DAISY nomination she had these words:
"I truly attribute Eris as a factor in my successful recovery and early discharge from the hospital."
Eris's Clinical Instructor added the following comments in regards to Eris's care of the above patient:
On the first day of care Eris described how she spent time "bonding" with her patient after she completed assessment and assisted with personal care. She ambulated with her several times in the hallway, as was encouraged postoperatively. The second day of care, the physicians removed a central line and when she was instructed to lay flat for 30 minutes, Eris pulled up a chair and sat with the patient the entire time. Eris just glows when she describes her interactions with patients, yet her demeanor is understated. She describes the very intimate details of the nurse-patient relationship almost as an afterthought, only sharing when specifically asked how she spent her time during the day. As the patient above describes, her personality is indeed infectious. She is devoted to providing undivided attention to her patients and focused on making the patient feel comfortable. Some other examples of how Eris demonstrates caring include: providing hand massages with personal care, providing emotional support to a patient whose insurance did not cover her surgery or hospital stay, delayed her lunch break to stay with a patient who was having an NG tube inserted and was afraid. She is 100% engaged with her patient and able to look past her own concerns about performance to be present for the patient.
