Erlyn is a nurse on CVU who always goes above and beyond what is expected. We had a patient with dementia discharged home from our unit. After the patient and his family were home there was discussion of readmitting the patient to have IV antibiotics for a longer timeframe. Erlyn, knowing this man was at a high risk for falls, due to his dementia and knowing the longer an elderly patient is in the hospital puts them at a higher risk of getting a secondary infection, offered an alternative. Erlyn spoke with the case manager and the mid-line IV access nurse and arranged for the patient to have his antibiotic infused every two days on an outpatient basis via an IV that is less invasive than a central line. Because of her knowledge of patient care, risks, and resources available to her, she prevented this patient from being readmitted and assured his care would be covered by his insurance. This is just one example of what she does every day to protect our patients.
