Erna was an amazing nurse. I've been a brittle type 1 diabetic for 22 years. In and out of hospitals with DKA many times. Once I am off the insulin drip, I go right back into DKA. That began to happen again on this admission. Erna kept my blood sugars down and had my brittle body almost back to normal.
She then had a day off and another nurse did her best to stabilize me. That night, my blood sugars kept climbing without anything to eat. When Erna returned, my blood sugar was over 600 and I was on my way back to ICU. Erna ran all over getting different meds and rushing to talk to doctors. Not a great way to start her 12-hour shift. She didn't get the chance to sit down and see how her day would begin.
Thanks to Erna, I avoided the ICU and DKA. She cares for her patients. I have never had a nurse work so hard to help me. She is more than an extraordinary nurse. She is an AMAZING nurse!
