November 2024 Honoree
Erwin R Mercado, BSN, RN, CGRN
A patient with a very complicated cancer diagnosis arrived at MD Anderson for a multitude of appointments and treatments. This patient was elderly and, unfortunately, did not have a great support system and was lost. Erwin had received a call from the GI Clinic stating a patient was at their desk, lost, and having tremendous pain at his G-Tube site. Erwin stopped what he was doing, went across campus to find the lost patient, obtained him a wheelchair, and transported him down to Endoscopy. He found a physician within the Endoscopy Center, explained the need for this patient to have his G-Tube assessed and changed, and truly be a strong patient advocate. Erwin assisted the physician with examining and exchanging the patient's G-Tube to enable them to receive nutrition and important medications that the patient was unable to consume due to a complication from their prior G-Tube. Once completed, Erwin provided detailed instructions and his number for the patient to reach out if he ever experiences any issues or has questions surrounding his enteral feeding. Erwin is a testament to really encapsulating every quality that is showcased through the DAISY Award and everything that nursing represents.
Thank you, Erwin R, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
