Essence has always been a light during dark times for our ECMO and specialty critical care patients. However, as a supportive staff member over the last couple of years, I’ve never encountered a nurse with so much compassion and resilience through a tough case like the past few days. In such a devastating and unfortunate situation, she managed to uphold a very complex patient on ECMO support, alongside the patient’s multi-organ failure requiring critical life-sustaining treatment, all while dealing with a distressing neurological prognosis. She adeptly navigated a tumultuous grief process for the family, who had traveled from out of state to receive such heartbreaking news. She helped coordinate, collaborate, and orchestrate multiple avenues of support for this grieving family, which maximized the level of assistance provided. The patient is 22 years old, and his time with us will be short. She was integral in ensuring that our support team felt okay. We are not; this is not a normal case. No patient or family should have to endure such catastrophic events. I’m just grateful she has been the glue to provide the utmost support for this family and patient.
