Nurse Theis was coming into work when she saw a Veteran who appeared to be lost near the canteen. It appeared this Veteran was walking with several other people near her, but when the other people kept walking, Esther realized that this Veteran was alone. Numerous people walked past this Veteran. The Veteran was noted to have facial drooping and slurred speech. Esther asked the Veteran if she was ok, and the Veteran stated, "I can't breathe!" Esther immediately took the Veteran down to the ED herself, and a stroke alert was called. The Veteran was later admitted to the ICU. Esther assisted the Veteran in getting her Vet ID card and had her spouse paged on the overhead speaker system. It was obvious that Esther had not started her tour of duty as she was holding numerous personal belongings. As numerous people and employees walked past, this employee cared enough to stop and help get the Veteran the medical care she needed. Esther should be recognized for her caring and compassion for our Veterans.
