It takes a very special person to be an RN, I know this because my mom was an OR Nurse for over 30 years. Since she had been very healthy, never needing hospitalization until she was recently admitted to TMMC, it was no surprise that she wanted to go home right away (no offense).
Ethan not only handled his technical RN duties expertly and professionally, he made us feel safe and secure, taking great care to make sure both my mom and I were as comfortable as possible. It was a great relief to our family that I could use the sleeper chair to stay with my mom and Ethan acknowledged that it wasn't easy to get much sleep in a hospital with all of the testing going on. It was worth it, though, knowing that all of the testing and monitoring was necessary to help make my mom feel better and healthy again. I also observed the practice of the nurses updating their patients' status during the hand-off or shift change right in front of the patient in their room. I had seen the updates being done at other hospitals but at the nurses' station or in the hallways. I appreciated knowing the up-to-the-minute details of my mom's condition and feeling that it afforded more privacy for her.
When it came time to be discharged, Ethan expedited the procedure by following up with our doctor about a prescription and making sure all of the details were in order. I think he did this in record time. He mentioned to us that my mom could order a snack from food service while we were waiting which made my mom really happy and she enjoyed her tuna sandwich. Ethan sat next to my mom and patiently and clearly explained each point in the discharge papers and asked us if we had questions. He then arranged for a volunteer to escort us to our car. One day, the clinical duties of an RN might be handled by robots, but what can't be replicated by machines is the caring, support, and empathy that helps patients heal physically and emotionally. We can't imagine receiving better care than we received from the people at Torrance Memorial. Thank you, Ethan, for your kindness and compassion. You're the best!
