I didn't think anything like that could ever happen to me, but Ethelyn urged me to see my doctor. There was no way I could have completed my last three hours of my shift without her I felt so overwhelmingly grateful to her and completely thankful.
I was 9 months pregnant, working midnights and I began having unimaginable pain in my leg during one of my night shifts. I even went to the bathroom to cry. I was assigned a patient in a completely different section far away from the rest of my patients for a total of 7 patients that night. I was completely struggling, and as a nurse, we don't like to really complain or ask for help we just keep marching on. Ethelyn saw me limping and saw the pain in my face and completely jumped in to help. Even though it would mean she would be adding another patient to her roster and would be inconvenienced and would be walking to another section completely as well she selflessly volunteered to do it and asked if I needed help with my other patients. She upheld me and allowed me to borrow her strength, which is no small feat as Ethelyn is not a younger nurse. She is an older nurse with many years under her belt. She knew something was wrong unbeknownst to me I did, in fact, have a blood clot in my leg. I didn't think anything like that could ever happen to me, but Ethelyn urged me to see my doctor. Even after I gave birth and came back, she had a congratulatory bag with things for the baby and lots of hugs for me. Although this is my story, she has plenty of other stories. I have seen her make personal connections with multiple staff members and multiple patients alike no discrimination on status or color. She is truly the heart of 6 North, and she is endearingly called "mama" or "auntie."
I have heard many PCTs say that they want to be a nurse like Ethelyn when they graduate nursing school, as she is an amazing role model. Ethelyn truly exemplifies the Ascension values of integrity, reverence, dedication, wisdom, creativity, and service to the poor.
