Eugene Sanchez, BSN, RN

I wanted to share my family’s experience in the Emergency Room during the day shift. Eugene and four other people cared for my ex-husband during his final moments and made a very hard goodbye easier.

My ex-husband had five ex-wives, and I think we surprised everyone when three of us were there that day. Eugene laughed with us when appropriate and was serious when needed—they always knew which was called for. The doctor asked which one of us was wife number one, then met numbers two and five and said, “Well, at least you all get along.” We laughed, and then became serious when it was time to discuss the future. They treated my daughter with kindness and explained everything thoroughly.

I am an RN and the Director of Risk Management at USC Arcadia Hospital. They did not know that at first and were still wonderful. After they found out, we talked about how hard nursing and Emergency Room work can be. You would never know how difficult it is because of their wonderful attitudes and caring personalities. Eugene truly represents what a nurse is, even in this difficult world. He and the others are angels.

Eugene was there every step of the way and took care of him so thoughtfully. He assisted with compassionately extubating him and was there until he took his last breath. He let several of us in to say goodbye. We will always remember him.

I know hospitals receive many complaints and not enough praise, so I wanted to make sure these five staff members received the recognition they deserve. Eugene and the team truly make Pomona Valley stand out. Eugene represents the top of the class of RNs. He absolutely deserves a DAISY Award, and I hope he receives the honor. I would love to see him receive such a prestigious award, as his care is exactly what this award is about. He represents the best of the best.
