Two rounds of chemo meant that I spent a total of nearly three years in an infusion chair. As you know, this is a time-consuming and unpleasant experience which the nurses see all day every day. The gift in it all was Eva. She has been a consistent part of my team and the entire time, offering not just professionalism and compassion, but real attention to me as a person: tracking down wayward medication, updating me on progress in the pharmacy, making sure I'm warm and comfortable, offering advice about frozen mittens and so much more. You can say that this is her job, and that would be true. But I was blessed to work with a loving person who cares deeply about her profession and each and every one of her patients. And there's the crux of it: I was HER patient. For three years, I felt cared for. Nursing is a calling. Eva heals with her smile and her positive energy as well as her talent. I will be proud to ring the bell with her this January.
