I went into premature labor at 28 weeks and was blessed to have Evan as my nurse. The labor was unexpected so I wasn't prepared at all; in fact, I was scheduled to start a birthing class the following week. I was terrified, but Evan's calm and compassionate guidance helped me to feel confident that I could successfully deliver my son.
I was very open to pain medication, but given the premature labor, I was hoping to avoid it as my sister had an adverse reaction during her delivery and I tend to be highly sensitive to medication side effects.
When I started contracting again, after 48 hours of being hospitalized, my bedside nurse had to leave for her other patient's delivery. I was worried about having a new nurse right before delivering, but Evan transitioned into the role with aplomb and kindness. She looked at me and said, 'You look like you're effectively managing your pain right now but medication is an option. Listen to your body and let me know what you need. I'll be here with you; I'm not leaving.'
When she said that, I immediately felt more self-efficacious, empowered and supported. Evan's nursing skills were excellent—but her clinical intuition, communication skills and compassion were phenomenal.
