Eve leads by example
Eve Sage is recognized for her ambitions, intelligence, and accomplishments.
It has been noted by many intrahospital staff and visitors that they can feel the positivity when walking onto our units. This has been a goal of Eve's positive, cohesive teamwork that keeps a quiet, enjoyable workplace for both the patients and the staff.
GSU has always been welcoming to everyone and the staff is always eager to assist or answer questions. This is due to Eve's leadership. When times get challenging, she always has a way to deescalate tension. We could give many examples of her wisdom and calm demeanor when a staff member is concerned with a situation.
Eve is an effective communicator. She listens very well to all sides while not passing judgment or making an assumption. She is one of the most equitable and fair people I have met in my life. She is an advocate to make sure the floor has the equipment and staff that is needed. She is currently working on ways to improve medication administration on the unit.
Eve is very pro-nursing and supports nurses that want to climb the clinical ladder or pursue higher education to reach their career goals as well as encouraging and supporting nurses to the Lead Academy. She works so hard to accommodate the multiple staff scheduling preferences while ensuring the unit is well staffed.
Last March, COVID-19 hit. Eve's leadership was challenged in a way no one could imagine. Eve guided the GSU and JSU staff while combining the units and increasing the patient census by almost double. She would put on her scrubs, mask, and face shield and jump into patient care. She never has missed a beat with her bedside skills i.e. inserting a difficult NGT, suctioning a trach patient, or helping with a combative patient. She leads by example while making sure her staff had the PPE and support needed during a difficult time. She carefully listened to her staff's concerns and found ways to help us through a difficult time. Her leadership during this time was and continues to be exemplary.
Today we have new challenges in our unit. Eve is always visible on the unit, comes and asks questions, and jumps in to do any task. She continues to support and advocate for her staff to provide safe care for the GSU and JSU patients. Eve, as always, has listened to everyone and has made changes and suggested ways to make it smoother for the entire staff. She listens to things that do not necessarily need to be directed to her, but her hands-on and caring attitude is what makes the staff willing to do things that are needed. She commands respect with her quiet, resourceful, and thoughtful ways to lead this unit.
