This is an amazing nurse with heart and compassion not always seen. There was a patient who went into cardiac arrest. The patient was not a patient from the unit this nurse belongs to. As the manager, I took the doctor to talk to the wife of this patient. She was extremely upset (understandability). The patient’s wife's first language was Spanish and neither I nor the hospitalist spoke that language. We brought the patient to see her husband and I asked if anyone spoke Spanish, Evelyn stepped up to talk to this very distraught woman to explain that her husband was in cardiac arrest. This nurse sat with the wife and explained everything that was happening in Spanish. She held her hand and allowed the wife to cry and voice her feelings in her native language. This nurse stayed with this patient’s wife while she was speaking to the chaplain and family. She was a kind voice and nurse for the wife to lean on while she waited for family. She stayed with the wife and again helped explain the details. She helped the wife and family during such a difficult time. I am so thankful for her ability to speak Spanish AND her ability to use compassion and empathy to help the family deal with an unexpected crisis.
