There are always tough days on any hospital unit, but especially on a neuro unit. One of the most difficult days I’ve ever had as a nurse is painted in a good light in my mind now because of Evynn, my charge nurse. I had a horrible day, where things kept going wrong, and all of my patients were so busy and so frustrated, and unfortunately, a lot of their frustrations were coming out on me. I was having a really tough time coping with the day, but having the support and help of Evynn made the difference. She helped me start IVs on patients who pulled them out, she helped me get medications passed on time, helped me answer phone calls, helped me reach out to doctors as needed, and made sure that I was able to take my lunch still. At the end of the day, Evynn checked in with me and asked me how I was doing and really listened. She lifted me up, encouraged me, and reassured me that I am a great nurse, even on tough days like this when I don’t feel it. Evynn is the best charge nurse I have ever had the privilege of working with, and her impact has changed me as a person and as a professional. I have never seen this level of patience in a person, and no matter how hard the day is, Evynn will always have a can-do attitude, and she is so solutions-oriented. I strive every day to be like her.
