Fabio went above and beyond the call of duty to help a patient who was brought from Charlotte Douglas Airport to Carolinas Medical Center while he was in route to his home in Brazil. Fabio, who is also from Brazil, was not only his primary nurse, but became his personal advocate and “pseudo” family. The patient had a major language barrier in understanding the medical terminology and what his diagnosis meant. Fabio translated the information the physician was telling him about his medical condition into Portuguese layman’s term he could understand. Upon the patients discharge, Fabio came in to the hospital to take the patient to the airport. Prior to taking him to the airport, he showed the patient around Charlotte to take pictures and site see. They went to lunch and then Fabio assisted the patient with retrieving his luggage for the airline. The patient and Fabio developed a true bond.
