The New Oxford American Dictionary defines the noun “nurse” as “a person trained to care for the sick/infirm, especially in a hospital.” As a verb, “alleviating an injured part by treating it carefully and protectively.” There are no words, however, to express my gratitude for your work and dedication when I was a patient at LRH due to total knee replacement surgeries. THANK YOU isn’t enough for your amazing care during my hospitalizations on both occasions. Your positive attitude and smile were the highlights of my time there. You made my stay so much more pleasant and your expertise made me comfortable in a time of fear. Your compassion and kindness did not go unnoticed. THANK YOU! As a retired special education preschool teacher with 40+ years, I have learned that the words of Winnie the Pooh help me express my thoughts & feelings. After three months have passed and I’m able to do more things independently again, I am reminded that “sometimes the smallest of things take up the most room in your heart.” When relatives and friends ask about my “knee surgery experience,” I realize I always share the outstanding care you gave me. Each time you came into my room you shared a smile with me – and that gave me a reason to smile despite what was happening. You had a gentle touch – fluffing my pillow, getting me a warm blanket, and encouraging me to drink some water. You always had time to listen to me and my endless questions. You shared your knowledge with me and my family. When I pushed the call button, you were there when I needed you the most with emotional support and advice. THANK YOU! And what I never ever will forget is what extra-special you did when I asked you to take a photo of me for my little grandchildren who were concerned about where I was and what was happening and why I wasn’t reading them their usual good night story on FaceTime and your response…you knew immediately what to do. You helped me change from the surgery gown to a nightgown. You helped me get out of the hospital bed and into a comfortable recliner. You combed my hair. You moved the IV tube and monitors out of the way. You wanted to make sure my littles wouldn’t be scared by the photo of Gramme in the hospital. You wanted them to know everything was A-OK. And when they saw the photo you took, they were reassured and happy. That meant and continues to mean, the world to me. I can’t thank you enough for the special excellent care you provided and for the unique gift you are to your patients. Thank you for being a caring nurse and for the long hours you put in.
