Our manager, Fatima Boomgaard, is the only reason we were all able to survive emotionally and physically working under these conditions for this past year.
Fatima has implemented practices on our unit that have generated improved patient outcomes by providing employees a means to perform their job duties more efficiently. Fatima was instrumental in a process to bundle hourly rounding and turn teams. She developed a practice for nightly safety huddles to provide nursing staff a platform by which to review concerns along with preventative measures to avoid adverse patient outcomes such as falls, pressure injuries, CLABSIs, and CAUTIs.
Additionally, she has developed, presented, and implemented Culture of Safety education, Charge RN training, and a NA Task Force which has been rolled out throughout our campus and in cases, across the health system. She encourages employees to achieve professional fulfillment by offering opportunities for them to be engaged. She also truly cares for each member of her team on a personal level. When she recognizes a need within an individual, she makes it her mission to show them that there is someone who cares by providing an open door, which inside a place of respite and support can be found. She promotes a healthy work-life balance knowing that when her staff are centered, fulfilled, and restored, the effects will, consequently, positively impact the care our patients receive.
Reflecting on the recognition statue which will be presented to the system-wide winners, I can't help but draw a comparison to the form with outstretched arms supporting the beaming star overhead, to our fearless Nursing Manager, Fatima Boomgaard, raising her staff up high so that they may shine.
Let me start by saying that my unit has been a COVID-19 unit since July of this past year. Prior to becoming a COVID-19 unit, my co-workers and I were pulled almost every shift to work with COVID-positive patients since March. Our manager, Fatima Boomgaard, is the only reason we were all able to survive emotionally and physically working under these conditions for this past year. She did everything she possibly could to help her staff. Fatima always had an open-door policy and encouraged staff to come to speak to her when they felt overwhelmed or anxious. When we officially became the medical-surgical COVID unit, she worked tirelessly to make everything organized and efficient for us. She personally created an organized system for our hallways that other units then modeled their systems off hers. She worked with epidemiology and infectious disease to guarantee her staff had every item of PPE needed to keep us safe. She was available 24/7 to her staff if they needed any help with staffing or had questions regarding the ever-changing hospital policies regarding the pandemic. My co-workers and I view her as a mentor in our nursing careers. She sets a high standard for whom we all want to be as a nurse and leader. She deserves much more than an award for the constant support she provides for her staff during these difficult times. Beaumont and 4 North are so lucky to have her!
