My dad was taken to the Emergency Department for what we thought was the start of pneumonia. Once there, his condition deteriorated rapidly and he was transferred to critical care. Within a matter of a few hours we were informed that he was dying. Some treat the elderly as expendable, especially as they get closer to the end of their life cycle. Fe was not like that. She treated my father as if he was a member of her own family and made his last few hours as comfortable as possible. She also extended hospitality to our family and patiently answered all of our questions and addressed our concerns. She had compassion, dignity, and patience while we absorbed the fact that Dad was not coming home. Fe treated my father like she intuitively knew the kindness and generosity that he exhibited his entire life and, in her sweet manner, graced and dignified his final hours. She made the absolute worst day of our lives a day when we could celebrate the humanity of a complete stranger. Fe Santa-Anna, you will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts. Thank you Fe on behalf of my entire family. Words cannot adequately express what she did for us that night.
