Felecia stayed at the bedside of the patient, talking with him even though he was unresponsive.
A few months ago, Felecia was the primary nurse for an elderly male patient that was being seen in the ED for a fall and altered mental status. The patient was found to have a head bleed with a poor prognosis and the family decided to get Hospice involved. The patient was here in the ED for an extended period of time due to Hospice trying to make arrangements for the patient to go home. The patient stayed overnight while waiting. During that time multiple family members came to spend time with the patient and each other. Then in the middle of the night, the family decided to go home and try to get some sleep before the patient got there. During the time after the family left, Felecia stayed at the bedside of the patient, talking with him even though he was unresponsive. When Felecia had to leave his bedside another nurse would stay until she was back but she was adamant that she didn’t want the patient to be alone.
Felecia also called the family to update them that the patient was declining more in case they wanted to come back in. The patient did live long enough for the family to return but passed away later that morning. That patient was my best friend’s uncle and in the weeks following his death, the family kept thanking me for the wonderful care and love shown to their entire family. They said Felecia was always there when needed and was so sweet. She made them comfortable during a bad time in their life. The wife told my friend “This was how I remembered Samaritan. Like the 'old Samaritan' where everyone shows how much they care." The family even brought staff baked goods after the funeral. Felecia was so kind and caring to this patient and his family and helped them more than she realized.
