August 2025 Honoree
Fiona Penafiel, LPN
Fiona's exceptional compassion and dedication to her patients are evident every day, but what truly sets her apart is her unwavering care for her colleagues. Fiona’s actions consistently exemplify the heart of nursing, not only in her clinical work but also in her support of her team.
Before becoming a full-time team member at Genesee Internal Medicine, Fiona worked in the nursing float pool. On one particular day when she was assigned to our office, she overheard an LPN expressing financial challenges regarding the renewal of her nursing license. This nurse, a single mother facing significant financial strain, was in danger of having to miss work if she couldn’t renew her license by the end of the day. To make matters more difficult, she was also struggling with navigating the website due to a recent address change.
Without hesitation, Fiona took it upon herself to assist this nurse in a way that went above and beyond the call of duty. Fiona not only helped her colleague contact the state to resolve the issues, but she also assisted with updating her address on the website and even helped with making the necessary payment. Thanks to Fiona’s compassionate intervention, this nurse was able to renew her license on time and avoid missing any work, all while maintaining her dignity and confidence.
Fiona’s actions were not just a display of kindness—they were a true reflection of the collaborative spirit and empathy that defines the nursing profession. She didn’t just see a colleague in need; she saw a person who needed help, and she made sure that help came in the most timely and efficient way possible.
For her outstanding support and compassion to both patients and colleagues, I wholeheartedly recommend LPN Fiona Penafiel for the DAISY Award. She embodies the very qualities this award seeks to honor, and her example inspires all of us who have the privilege of working alongside her.
