July 2019 Honoree
fitztway nuestro, RN
My lovely friend B fell and broke his hip and then had a stroke post-op. As a fiercely independent 97-year-old man, still driving, shopping, and cooking for himself, it was completely devastating.
He unfortunately then went on to develop pneumonia and was given 24-48 hours of antibiotics to see how things progressed. I sat with B all night and Fitz was his nurse. She was kind, attentive and caring. As a nurse myself I think the way we watch care given is more judgmental, and Fitz was excellent and thorough in everything she did. Her practice is spot on and she made sure that B and I were cared for all night, even calling on call physio to try to ease his chest.
Sadly, the decision was made to put B on the end of life pathway and again as I sat with him overnight the next night, Fitz took care of us. B was awake and she made extra effort to ensure he was included and comfortable. I think Fitz is an excellent nurse and her attention to detail and caring attitude are amazing.
