A patient had a malfunction of a wound vac. It was in the pubic area and the wounds were massive. It filtrated acidity fecal matter (diarrhea) through the entire vac and contaminated the area. She was in extreme pain. Fran, the charge nurse, knew exactly what needed to be done. He removed the contaminated vac and diligently cleaned and flushed the contaminated area until all the fecal matter was gone and the wound was clean. The process was long and painful. Fran worked so hard to get the patient out of pain and get the wound cleaned and re-bandaged. He never left her side. We felt so confident in his ability. He took charge and did what needed to be done. The patient's biggest enemy was infection with these massive deep wounds. Fran gave the patient her best chance for a full recovery. Without Fran's care, the patient could have gotten an infection and might have died. He probably saved her life. What made this so outstanding, even apart from Fran's skill and compassion for the patient, was the fact that his shift ended at 7PM and he stayed with the patient until the job was done. He stayed until she was out of pain, safe, and comfortable. If that isn't dedication and an example to all of the health care profession, I don't know what is.
