Time after time, Ms. Hunter has not only been instrumental in assisting staff but has also exemplified her ability to go above and beyond for staff, patients, and their respective families.
Frances always makes sure our patients are comfortable and happy on 3B/SNU. One of our patients did not like the hospital food and continuously reminded staff that she was on a low-carb diet. Frances went out of her way and bought her a salad from Chick-fil-A. The patient was so thankful that Frances thought of her in such a kind way that she told every single person who walked into her room that day.
“The sun shines and makes a brighter day,
Brings forth a new beginning in a brighter way.”
Ms. Frances Hunter has many qualities that qualify her to be a leader in her field. Time after time, Ms. Hunter has not only been instrumental in assisting staff but has also exemplified her ability to go above and beyond for staff, patients, and their respective families. The examples of this are many, but a few particular ones stand out.
As a patient advocate, Ms. Hunter has ensured that patients are fully taken care of and that all needs are met upon discharge. One way she has accomplished this is by paying for patients’ medications out of her own pocket when patients were unable to do so. This has enabled her to demonstrate leadership qualities that she has repeatedly displayed.
Additionally, Ms. Hunter has not only focused on patients, but has also ensured that families’ needs are met while their loved ones receive care at FGH. An incident that has occurred more than once involved Ms. Hunter encountering a patient’s family ahead of her in the cafeteria. Due to a lack of financial resources at the time, the family was unable to pay for their entire meal. Ms. Hunter displayed her character by paying for the meal with her own badge and refusing reimbursement at a later time.
This incident, along with the fact that she has repeatedly paid for families’ guest meals out of her own pocket, not only humbles the rest of us, but also defines the true meaning of nursing, something that is seldom found elsewhere. Furthermore, these actions display the characteristics that the DAISY Award stands for and enable Ms. Hunter to serve as a role model for everyone around her.
In light of the above, and many other examples that characterize her qualities of going above and beyond what her role entails, Ms. Frances Hunter is the perfect example of a DAISY Nurse. It would be an honor for the entire SNU team to see her receive this award.
