Frank Riehl, BSN
I would like to recognize Frank for the exceptional compassion, professionalism, and patient-centered care he demonstrated while caring for a particularly challenging patient.
This patient consistently refused nursing and medical interventions despite facing significant risks for multiple complications and despite multiple educational rounds by different teams. Establishing trust and engaging the patient in care proved difficult for many members of the healthcare team.
As a newly graduated nurse who had just recently completed orientation, Frank voluntarily accepted the challenge and approached the patient with remarkable empathy, patience, and determination. Frank took the time to listen to the patient's concerns, fears, and preferences rather than focusing solely on the patient's refusals and tasks. Through therapeutic communication, active listening, and genuine compassion, Frank built a positive rapport that helped the patient feel heard and valued.
He demonstrated exceptional clinical judgment by identifying the patient's unique needs and tailoring his approach accordingly. Frank consistently provided thorough patient education, explaining the purpose and importance of recommended treatments and interventions in a way that the patient could understand. His ability to connect with the patient increased the patient's willingness to participate in aspects of the care plan and fostered greater trust in the healthcare team.
What is especially remarkable is that Frank accomplished this as a new graduate nurse. He did not allow his limited experience to diminish his confidence or commitment to providing outstanding care. Instead, he combined his clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and compassion to develop an individualized, patient-centered approach that prioritized both safety and dignity.
While many staff members understandably rotated assignments due to the challenges associated with caring for this patient, Frank never complained or attempted to avoid responsibility. In fact, he voluntarily requested to continue caring for the patient on subsequent shifts to maintain continuity of care and preserve the therapeutic relationship he had worked so hard to establish. His willingness to go above and beyond demonstrated true dedication to both his patient and the nursing profession.
In addition to providing exceptional patient care, Frank actively participates in Shared Governance initiatives to help ensure our unit remains aligned with the highest standards of patient care.
Frank's actions embody the core values of nursing: compassion, advocacy, respect, and excellence. He transformed a difficult situation into an opportunity to build trust, improve patient engagement, and provide meaningful, individualized care.
His commitment to doing what was best for his patient, regardless of the challenges involved, makes him highly deserving of DAISY Award recognition.
