Fred had already clocked out but noticed the wife of one of the patients (who was wheelchair-bound) looking distressed as she wheeled herself toward the elevator. Fred asked what was wrong, and she explained that her husband needed items in her car. “I know it’s raining,” she said, “but I only have this jacket on, and I know I will get soaked, and then I’ll be cold.” Without hesitation, Fred volunteered to go to the car, get an umbrella, and accompany her to the car to help her retrieve the items her husband needed. About 1 hour and 14 min after the shift ended, I saw him come back to the floor where Fred had just finished a shift – obviously wet from being rained on. The lady looked in my direction and said, “ Fred is my guardian angel,” as she watched him take the items that they retrieved from the car to her husband. Fred consistently goes above and beyond what is expected to meet the needs of the patients and to demonstrate a caring personality. Fred provides skillful and compassionate care!
