Freddy has done a great job of thinking of different health promotion strategies, using motivational interviewing techniques, and staying highly engaged.
It is with great pleasure that Freddy Roberts is recognized as the Hood College 2021 DAISY Award nursing student honoree. Most notably, Freddy displayed professionalism, leadership, care, and compassion during his spring 2021 semester community health clinical and throughout his participation in the Hood College Million Hearts Independent Study Project. Freddy is a participant of the Hood College Million Hearts Independent Study project, which is part of a nationwide Million Hearts initiative aimed at preventing one million heart attacks and strokes over five years. As such, Freddy is laser-focused on health promotion efforts in the local community, providing education and coaching to at-risk individuals on blood pressure management and other risk factors for heart disease and stroke. According to one of his Million Hearts clients:

“Freddy has done a great job of thinking of different health promotion strategies, using motivational interviewing techniques, and staying highly engaged. His enthusiasm for nursing is exciting and contagious. Freddy is a keen observer and a good listener. He picks up on subtle cues that others might miss. For example, if Freddy sees me drinking something on ZOOM or in-person, he will make a comment or ask what I am having, leading to discussions about caffeine, calories, or fluid intake/restriction.”

Freddy displays the maturity and the ability to engage at-risk patients thoughtfully and effortlessly in conversation that captures opportunities for teaching and coaching regarding health-promoting behaviors aimed at reducing premature deaths and enhancing the quality of life for all people. Freddy exemplifies calm, empathy, compassion, leadership, and advocacy in nursing, which is why his nomination for the 2021 student DAISY Award is no surprise to all nursing program faculty and students who have worked with him.
