Gabby chatted amicably with the family and the patient, establishing herself as an ally.
Gabby came to the PICU as a traveler and, after leaving for a short while, came back to us as staff. We couldn't be luckier. Gabby is a highly organized, intelligent, critical thinking nurse who has an easy, confident presence that puts families at ease. She is an avid preceptor in the PICU, quick to offer her expertise to new and experienced nurses alike. She also quickly connects with patients (especially when talking about pets!) and is able to make even the most stubborn teenagers her best friend.
Recently, I witnessed her work closely with a critically ill child and their family. While performing a host of different cares, Gabby chatted amicably with the family and the patient, establishing herself as an ally in what can sometimes be an alienating environment. After nighttime cares, the patient said she was comfortable, upon which the father remarked "she hasn't said she's comfortable in months." The patient also thanked Gabby for her work.
This scene is typical of Gabby's interactions with patients and families. I know they value her and the care she provides as her peers in the PICU do.
