Case after case, Gabby sees humanity beyond the disease and can meet the patient where they are.
Empathetic, compassionate, and dedicated are a few words used to describe our 2023 DAISY Award recipient, Gabby Delos Reyes. You may also add patient, calm, humble, and kind. It is Gabby’s nature to take care of people, both patients, and staff, and it shows whenever she is at work.

Time and time again, Gabby steps up to volunteer to primary patients that benefit from consistent care. These situations have been complicated; often involving delirium and additional nursing work to keep the patient safe. This can take a toll on staff, as often, these patients are in a period of not being the best versions of themselves. Case after case, Gabby sees humanity beyond the disease and can meet the patient where they are. Some of these situations have gone on for months on end and (while Gabby has had partners) she consistently cares for these patients shift after shift. Consistency in care makes a real difference for the patients. In one instance, the relationship that Gabby was able to build was pivotal in successfully developing a routine for a very scared patient with short-term memory loss. This routine allowed the patient to accept the care that was being offered. Gabby figured out how to work with the patient which kept them feeling safe and minimized episodes of lashing out. This made all the difference for this patient and for the rest of the staff on the unit (and the hospital).

In addition to her dedication to patient care, Gabby also takes care of the staff. Gabby is approachable and supportive in both the charge nurse and preceptor roles. She builds up the team and keeps morale up by planning outings outside of work and includes everyone. She is a mentor, a cheerleader, a teacher, and a friend.
