Her smile immediately put me at ease and I felt that I’d be in good, caring hands with her.
I wanted to recognize Gabi Campbell's hard work and commitment to making my post-surgical stay comfortable. Nursing is one of the least appreciated professions but hard working individuals like Gabi make it so much easier to appreciate them as well as develop respect for what nurses do. During my three day stay in a unit of St. Joseph’s hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, Gabi was the nurse on duty during the day time. I claim to be low maintenance but the reality is that after major cervical spine surgery I needed a lot of help. I assume that because it was the end of the year people had scheduled surgeries due to their insurance deductible or tax reasons because the floor I was on was packed. The nursing staff were very busy at work, and some patients needed a lot more care than others. Gabi introduced herself and a student who she was training. Her smile immediately put me at ease and I felt that I’d be in good, caring hands with her. Over the next few days, I learned that my assumption was spot on. Throughout my stay, Gabi showed compassion, empathy, and an overall calmness that helped me deal with my post surgical pain and the subsequent pain management. As I mentioned, I try to be low maintenance but quickly realized that I would be needing a lot of help during my stay in the hospital. I felt lucky to have Gabi as my nurse during my stay. She came quickly every time I hit the call button and never showed any annoyance towards my repeatedly calling for help. Aside from her calming and caring personality, I also learned that Gabi was very knowledgeable about her work. She knew all my medications, my symptoms, and when to call the doctor with her suggestions. I could only hear her side of the conversation but I could tell that the doctors appreciated that she always called prepared, explained the situation and symptoms to them, and also provided her recommendations. And after these calls, at least in my case, they agreed with her 100% of the time. I also saw that despite how busy she was, she continued to teach the student who was shadowing her. She did it so efficiently that it was part of her actual task and not a separate event. In my profession, I try to employ high performing individuals who are not only good at their daily tasks but also have a strong customer-centric mindset. I believe that in her profession, Gabi has all those qualities and more. She will achieve great heights in her career.
