As a New Grad, Gabriel set the pace for my learning curve and my expectations. Throughout the five weeks, Gabriel showed me the way of doing things properly and based on policy. One example was the bladder scan process following the removal of a Foley, when even during report, he took time to clarify policy to me and the incoming nurse, preventing premature actions and procedures.
He took the time to tailor the training to my individual needs with a focus on patient care. As a new grad, I didn't know what I didn't know, but he took the time to look for the tools I needed to help me transition to the next level. One morning he showed up with a "nursing brain" so that he could help me get organized during my report and throughout the day.
With due work on my behalf and plenty of patience on his, following his suggestions increased my ability to get to know my patients better, which improved my hand-off report.
I have plenty of examples to write about, such as how he sets daily goals and expectations to help his patients, and give them something to look forward to; he showed me how he moves patients before surgery and how he encourages our patients to get up properly after surgery; he also taught me how to navigate through Cerner efficiently.
I found Gabriel to be genuine in his care, a compassionate patient advocate, efficient in his practice, keen on what's expected of him, and an overall role model to follow.
