Gabby embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award through her kindness, professionalism, and dedication to her patients and families.
When my mother was recently admitted to the hospital, we were fortunate enough to have Gabby as her night nurse. From the very beginning, Gabby’s personality shone through — she was kind, patient, and always came in with a smile. She had a way of putting both my mom and me at ease, and she treated my mom not just as a patient but as if she were her own family.
One of the things that stood out the most was how attentive Gabby was to my mother’s pain control. She didn’t just carry out orders — she advocated. She recognized that my mom needed more support to feel comfortable and human again, and she communicated with the team to ensure additional interventions like lidocaine patches and muscle relaxers were added. Her persistence and advocacy made an enormous difference in my mom’s recovery and dignity.
Gabby was also incredibly knowledgeable. Hip precautions are not an area I’m familiar with, even as a nurse myself, but Gabby took the time to educate both of us. She explained clearly, answered every question, and reassured us that safety was always her priority. She even repositioned my mom carefully and checked to ensure her hip was never at risk before leaving the room.
Her professionalism extended to the way she communicated with her colleagues. She gave excellent handoffs right in front of us, including my mom’s concerns, my concerns, and detailed information about her pain management regimen. Seeing her advocate so thoroughly gave us confidence that my mom’s needs were being heard and addressed.
One moment I will never forget was when my mom experienced a sudden hypotensive episode, with her blood pressure dropping to 55/47. Gabby acted swiftly and confidently — there was no hesitation. She knew exactly what to do, and her calm, skilled response gave us both reassurance in an otherwise frightening moment.
Every time Gabby was at my mom’s bedside, I felt like I could finally rest a little easier. Her blend of clinical expertise, compassion, and advocacy is exactly what nursing is all about. She made my mom feel cared for as a person, not just a patient, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
Gabby embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award through her kindness, professionalism, and dedication to her patients and families. I will never forget the way she cared for my mom, and I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.
