Gabrielle has a rare combination of skills that allows her to warm a room, collaborate with anybody, see the big picture and the details simultaneously, and find a way to make an impact. She is hard working, always upbeat, and a mentor to her colleagues. As the Sickle Cell Program Nurse, she helps inform and develop all aspects of program development. In addition, she takes on the very personal and compassionate role of advocating for sickle cell patients during their most difficult hospitalizations. She engages hospital staff to help them understand these patients' underlying challenges and needs. She helps others provide better care by being more sympathetic to the smoldering torture that is Sickle Cell disease. She also understands the challenges a hospital team faces trying to work with youth with chronic diseases and she instills in the team a stronger sense of engagement. She recognized systematic problems with care for Sickle Cell patients and took the initiative to convene discussion sessions with her professional colleagues. Her energy seems boundless. When she sees suffering or harm she acts. When New Orleans was devastated by Katrina's after-effects, Gabrielle had to go and help provide medical care. She has travelled to Tanzania many times to help provide healthcare in under-resourced areas. This year she is travelling to Indonesia, not as a vacationer or tourist, but as a nurse volunteering in a clinic. Whether in the community, in the hospital, or across continents, Gabrielle is one of the best examples of Seattle Children's broad host of talented nurses. She is a nurturing, hands-on care provider, an endless source of enthusiasm, optimism and compassion, and she never shies away from a challenge. It is a privilege to count her as a colleague.
