He is patient while listening to the patient whom he is caring for. He is a steady source of knowledge on what to do and how to do certain things if issues take a turn in a negative way.
Peter Tamba, RN, began his nursing career at the Loma Linda VA where he worked in the emergency room and then the chemotherapy unit. He transferred to the Portland VA chemotherapy unit in 2016 and has been an asset to the unit since the very beginning. He is professional and patient with everyone he cares for and is also engaged with every patient and family member interaction. He knows what nursing excellence is and embodies it every day. He consistently delivers the highest quality, compassionate nursing care to our Veterans receiving chemotherapy. Even when a patient is not assigned to him, he checks in on them while they are in clinic and has fostered deep connections with many patients and their families. He is the chemo unit UBC chair, Safe Patient Handling Peer Leader, and preceptor to new nurses and post-baccalaureate nurse residents. He even took a detail to the chemo nurse manager position where he excelled. His nursing practice exemplifies the ICARE values: Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence, and is so deserving of the DAISY Award.

I am writing in reference to Mr. Peter Tamba. During our treatment in the clinic where Peter works, he has gone beyond the call of duty. It has been such a struggle to draw blood from patient X, however, Peter never shows his frustration with trying to do his job no matter what obstacles arise. He just shakes it off and carries on. He does not allow any hurdles nor accept stumbling blocks to slow his work down. He is attentive and alert, he foresees what difficulty is ahead and makes the move to have the snag removed.

He is patient while listening to the patient whom he is caring for. He is a steady source of knowledge on what to do and how to do certain things if issues take a turn in a negative way. He is a very skillful and competent nurse. The chemo was new to both of us and the family. Peter made us feel like a relative, he seemed to look forward to seeing us. He takes great care of the veterans and their overall health. Peter had tried several times to draw blood and since the patient did not want to part with it, Peter was instrumental in getting the ultrasound tech to take care of the problem, thus eliminating all the pokes and sticks, and of course time
wasted.

He offers coffee, sandwiches, and juice, and most of all he keeps a warm blanket to share with the patient and the caregiver, me. We love Peter very much and are often grateful to God for him. Mr. Peter Tamba is an extraordinary DAISY Nurse.
