As a mom of two children with Type 1 diabetes and a daughter on the autism spectrum, sending my kids off to school has truly been something fraught with anxiety. It wasn't until we stepped into Nurse Gail's office that we knew what it felt like to truly be cared for in a school setting, and to say she put my nerves at ease would be an understatement. Nurse Gail went above and beyond, not just caring for them, but making them feel welcome, comfortable and more importantly confident to transition to a point when they were capable of handling their diabetes. Nurse Gail worked all throughout middle school with my son to ensure that by the time he hit high school, he was capable of doing things on his own. This was NO easy feat, especially since both he and his sister with Type 1 had paras. Under her guidance, they went from needing paras to growing in self-awareness. The love, attention, and support she gave them went far and beyond anything you would find in an IEP or medical plan. And even when it came to my daughter on the spectrum, it was known that her office was a safe space and one that she could go to when life got overwhelming, and she needed a moment to compose herself. People like Nurse Gail don't come around often, but when you do, you cherish them. There is no better deserving person for this award.
